New Balance, Old Rivalries in NYC This Weekend

Manhattan NY - The New Balance Games, held at the Armory on Saturday January 21st, looks to have stacked its events with some of the east coast's top talent.  In addition to the high school events, the meet also showcase some elite level competition, in the form of the 400m,800m, and elite mile.

500m Rematch

Last year at the New Balance Games, Strymar Livingston of Christopher Colombus was outkicked by Najee Glass of Seton Hall Prep, NJ in the 500m.  Glass' time of 1:02.22 set the new National record at the time, but that glory did not last long.  After looking at race footage, as well as first-hand accounts, it seemed that Glass stepped out of his lane, and the record was stripped away.  The win went to Livingston, whose time of 1:02.88 was still good for #3 All-Time.  One year later, and that showdown will be replayed.  This time, both athletes will have Champ Page of Wise MD to deal with, who ran a very respectable 48.5 at the Hispanic Games.

Section 3 Standouts

The New Balance Games stand as the last two Auto-Qualifying spots for the Millrose Mile available.  On both the boys and the girls' side of the event, runners from section 3 are the top seeded athletes for New York State.  For the girls, it is XC All-American Laura Leff of West Genesee vying for her chance to make the cut.  For the boys, it is Zavon Watkins of Liverpool, who managed to beat Strymar Livingston in the 800m last year indoors at the State Championships.  Other notable NY runners are Emily Waligurski of Onteora, and Dan Lennon of Peru.

How Low Can Cheserek Go

Edward Cheserek of St. Benedicts Prep said he would be trying to break that 4 minute barrier in the mile in the upcoming weeks, and the field he has immersed himself in looks like it could be the one to do it.  Cheserek has entered in the Elite Mile, which is reserved for the professional athletes, under the Kenyan banner.  With runners sticking with him the whole race, unlike at Bishop Loughlin where he was running alone, who knows how fast this junior for jersey can go.
