The Bronx, N.Y. - Adam Yohanan and Pier Berkmans finished 1-2 to lead the Bronx High School of Science to a commanding 42-80 victory over Brooklyn Tech at the PSAL Group Run at Van Cortlandt Park on Saturday.
The senior Yohanan (17:27.91) and sophomore Berkmans (17:28.23) broke away in the backhill loop and coasted to the victory at a meet many consider to be a primer for the long cross country season.
“It was kind of a tempo run in the last 2K,” said Yohanan, who ran on Science’s State Federation-qualifying team last year. “We kind of decided in the middle of the woods to tempo it in."
Port Richmond finished in third followed by Boys & Girls in fourth.
Francis Lewis senior Michael Delligatti, who qualified for the State Federation meet last year, finished in third individually in 17:44.03.
“Today is a day where I scout things out and see who is going to be up there,” said Delligatti, whose Francis Lewis team returns six of its seven top runners from last year. “I saw Boys and Girls, Brooklyn Tech, me and my teammate Victor (Eng) and Bronx Science. That was the lead pack.”
Girls:
Port Richmond, the defending PSAL city champion, put five runners in the top eight for 23 points in an impressive PSAL opener.
Junior Jaclyn Panepinto led the wave of Lady Raiders in 20:59.84. Junior Fabiola Oubida from the High School for Health Professions and Human Services broke up the Port Richmond block in the top four, finishing second in 21:38.17.
“Today the the girls’ bodies looked much better,” said coach Marissa Olivieri after the team’s fourth place finish at the Villa Bears Invitational last weekend. “We’re starting to get race (fit).”
Stuyvesant finished in third with 70 points, followed by Bronx Science with 127.
