Wagner Athletics Announces 2011 Hall Of Fame Class

Staten Island, NY - Wagner College Athletic Director #Walt Hameline# announced that five former student-athletes will comprise the 2011 Seahawk Hall of Fame class. Jennifer Albrizio (Class of 1985, Softball), John Chaney (Class of 1988, Football), Andy Fellouris (Class of 1986, Football), Frank Gunther, (Class of 1964, Golf), and Milan Rikic (Class of 1995, Basketball) were selected on the merit of their athletic prowess. The five-person class will be inducted on October 29, 2011 when the Green & White host Albany on Homecoming Day at Noon.

Jennifer Albrizio started and played softball for four years. In her junior and senior years, she led the Seahawks to a combined record of 22-17, including a 14-6 mark her junior year. She was one of the top hitters on the team throughout her career. She possessed excellent speed on the bases and was a very athletic player and also had a penchant for hitting triples and, despite playing just an average of 17 games per season, she still ranks third in Wagner history in triples with 13. Defensively, she made the tough plays look easy on an infield that didn't have true hops. Sue Parler coached Albrizio during her first two seasons before moving on to become the head coach at Seton Hall. Parler described Abrizio as “First among equals. Not only was she a clean-fielding shortstop, but it came to be an expectation for her to hit a triple.”

John Chaney was one of the finest all-around athletes in Wagner history. A dynamic multi-dimensional two-way player, the 6-2, 180-pound Chaney was extremely versatile, excelling as a defensive back, wide receiver, kickoff returner, punt returner as well as on coverage teams. In one game during his junior season, he recorded seven special teams tackles. He was a key component in Wagner's historic 1987 season and made a host of big plays for a 13-1 team that captured the Division III National Championship. In 1985, his sophomore season, he averaged a whopping 17.3 yards per reception average which was tops on the team. He played on teams that compiled a combined record of 37-9 (1985-88), including a 22-3 mark during his junior and senior seasons. Following his Wagner career, he was a free agent signee of the New York Giants. Chaney was also a walk-on with the men's basketball team and a member of the track & field team.

Andy Fellouris was widely considered to be the best all-around defensive football player at Wagner in the mid 1980's. A born leader, he was a team captain during each of his final two seasons on Grymes Hill and was a four-year varsity member and three-year starter. He recorded more than 100 tackles in each of his final three seasons and led the Seahawks in tackles as a both a junior and senior. An exceptionally instinctive and hard-hitting linebacker, he was equally adept at stopping the run and the pass. This local product and graduate of Tottenville High School, amassed 343 career tackles, which ranks sixth on the Seahawk all-time list. The MVP of the 1985 team, he helped lead Wagner to a combined record of 31-9-1 (1982-85) during his four-year career, headlined by a 9-2 mark in his senior season. He came up with five interceptions during his senior season and wound up with a career total of nine which ranks ninth on the all-time Seahawk list and tops among linebackers. Following his graduation, he served as middle linebackers coach in 1986 and on the 1987 National Championship team.

Frank Gunther, considered by many to be one of the finest golfers in Wagner history, becomes the first Seahawk golfer to be enshrined in the Hall of Fame. In his senior year of 1964, while playing under head coach Herb Sutter, he captured the prestigious Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Championship. He also served as captain of the 1964 team while earning Most Valuable Player honors. His leadership and sharp shot-making helped guide the Seahawks to a 9-1 record. Wagner lost its opening match of the season and reeled off nine consecutive wins thereafter. The Seahawks capped the season with victories over St. John's and Manhattan in a tri-meet. The win over St. John's was particularly noteworthy since the Redmen were considered one of the top teams in the East. Following his graduation, he went on to enjoy a dominant amateur career on the local golf scene, winning several Richmond County Country Club and Staten Island Amateur titles. He also qualified for and competed in the competitive Ike Championship on multiple occasions.

Milan Rikic a native of Serbia, was one of the most complete all-around basketball players in Wagner history. This versatile 6-8, 220-pound forward was ranked sixth all-time on the Seahawk scoring list at the time of his graduation with 1,549 career points, a figure which currently ranks ninth. He is also sixth all-time in field goals made (569), eighth in field goal attempts (1,187), three-point shooting percentage (.387), free throws made (322) and free throws attempted (442). His 113 games played is 12th all-time and, as a testament to his durability and toughness, he was in the starting lineup for all 113 of those contests. In 1991-92, he was named to the NEC All-Newcomer Team and then, as a senior, was named to the All-NEC Second-Team. His leadership and prowess helped Wagner to winning seasons in three of his four years, highlighted by an 18-12 mark in his sophomore season of 1992-93.
