PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- At the 117th running of the Penn Relays, the Cornell men's track team proved they were competitive with the best in the nation. The Big Red had several top relay showings that helped produce 12 IC4A qualifiers and four alterations to the all-time top 10 lists.
The performance of the men's 4X800 in the Championship of America on Saturday was one of the chief highlights as the quartet of senior Tommy Roy (1:53.4), sophomore
Nick Wade (1:48.6), freshman John Schilkowski (1:51.6) and freshman
Will Weinlandt (1:50.4) ran 7:24.29. They finished in tenth in the Championship in the fastest time at Cornell since 1975 and now #3 all-time.
The Big Red had a very good 4X100 on Friday as the team of freshman
Kinsley Ojukwu, sophomore
Jedidiah Adarquah-Yiadom, senior Andy Ahart and sophomore
Bruno Hortelano-Roig ran 41.09 to finish second in the heat and advance the Eastern final on Saturday. Their time is #8 all-time at Cornell. Unfortunately, a dropped stick on the second exchange in Saturday' final derailed their attempt at a Penn Relays Wheel.
On Friday, the shuttle hurdle relay of junior
Nick Huber, junior
Dan Hagberg, junior
Andrew Corridore and sophomore Zach Zeller ran 59.87 to produce the third best time in school history. Also on Friday, the distance medley relay of junior
Andy Arnold (3:03.4 for 1200), junior
Tom Randall (49.2 for 400), sophomore
David McCuiston (1:53.9 for 800) and senior
Matt De Silva (4:09.2 for 1600) ran 9:55.84 for fourth in the college section. The 4X200 of senior Rich Seminick, senior co-captain
Chris Tait, freshman
Justin McCollin and Randall ran 1:28.56 for fourth in their heat while the 4X400 of senior co-captain
Cody Boyd (50.3), Tait (49.6), junior Dan Thomas (48.3) and junior
Brian Freitas (48.3) ran 3:16.78 for second in the Heps race.
The men had several good individual performances as well. On Thursday evening, the sophomore trio of
Bobby Micikas, Matt McCullough and Bretty Kelly all dipped under the IC4A standard in the 5000. Micikas dropped 5 seconds from his old personal best to place second in the college section as he ran 14:26.55, McCullough ran 14:33.93 for seventh and Kelly ran a new PR of 14:35.00 for eighth. Junior
Chris Arlinghaus was sixth in the Eastern high jump, clearing an IC4A qualifier of 6-8 1/4, senior
Gary Jones was second in the Eastern triple jump at 50-1 3/4, freshman
Steven Bell was fifth at 49-7, senior
Julian Remouns was sixth at 48-8 3/4 (all three were under the IC4A standard) and freshman
Dan Scott was eighth at 47-0 3/4. In the throws, junior
Bob Belden was third in the College shot put at 55-11 3/4 (an IC4A qualifier) and 18th in the college discus at 155-5. In the Eastern long jump, sophomore
Jourdan White was seventh in an IC4A-qualifying 23-5 1/2 and Bell was 25th in 20-2 1/2. And sophomore Bob Fiedler was 24th in 165-9 in the college hammer while freshman
Peter Roach and
David Kim competed in the pole vault.
