DeRoo Breaks School Record at Carolina Spring Break Classic

Elise DeRoo
CAROLINA, Puerto Rico (3/21/10)—The Colgate University women's track and field team closed out its spring break training trip with a selection of runners competing in the 5th annual Carolina Spring Break Classic track meet in Carolina, Puerto Rico.

Sophomore Elise DeRoo (Newton, Conn.) shattered the school record and finished second overall in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:07.15. DeRoo's time qualified her for the ECAC championships and broke the previous record time of 17:22.08 set by Danielle Whicher '07 in 2004. This was first time DeRoo ever ran this event outdoors and only the second time in her career, her first time was last month at the Patriot League Indoor Championships, where she won the title with an ECAC qualifying time of 17:24.85.

The Raiders also competed in a couple of relay races as sophomores Megan Snell (Beaverton, Ore.), Ali Atkinson (Weston, Conn.), along with junior Michele Miller (Silver Spring, Md.), and senior Ashley Niness (Berwyn, Pa.), finished sixth and seventh overall in the 4x400 and 4x100 meter relays.  The squad snapped the tape in the 4x400 relay with a time of 4:01.48 for sixth place and finished seventh in the 4x100 relay with a time 49.92.

The Raiders will continue their outdoor season on April 2-3, at the Sam Howell Invitation
