Saturday Updates

Boys Pentathlon - Marques Atkinson used an impressive last lap kick in the final event of the boys pentathlon in the 1000 meter run to go from barely inside of the top 10 entering the event to coming out as a national runner-up in the final scoring for the multi-event. The Atlee junior amassed a total of 3,556 points and finished just 34 points behind the champion from Pennsyvalnia. Atkinson earned 893 points to his cumalative score in his 2:38.34 closing performance in the 1000. Christiansburg junior Travis Hudson had built up enough cushion of points entering the final event of the 1000 which would be his most difficult event for the high jump/hurdles specialist to maintain a top six final standing and earn his second All-American honor of the meet (high jump All-American on Friday) with a total score of 3469 points for sixth place.

Girls Pole Vault - For the second straight year, Lizzie Powell of Patrick Henry is an All-American in the pole vault at the National Scholastic Indoor Championships. She finished just under her height from a year ago at the Armory with her sixth place clearance of 12'5.50" (3rd in 2009 at 12'6") in a more competitive field from a year ago.  The performance is her third best ever indoors behind only her 2009 NSIC performance and her state meet record 12'7" clearance two weeks ago. Also competing in the finals with Powell from Virginia were Stephanie Oleson (11th place) of Henrico and Nicole Harding (14th place) of Western Albemarle.

Boys 60 Hurdles Semis - Group AAA state 55 meter hurdles state champion DreQuan Hoskey of Henrico can feel a national title in reach after his semifinal performance in the 60 meter hurdles where he clocked the second fastest time among all finals qualifiers at 7.98. The Henrico senior was only one hundredth of a second slower than the fastest qualifier for the finals.Joining Hoskey in the finals and creating the possiblity of two All-Americans from Virginia in the event was Christiansburg's Chris Dobbins who posted the fiourth fastest time in the semifinals round at 8.05.

Boys 4xMile - Competing from different sections, Colonial Forge and Atlee boys posted nearly identical times with Colonial Forge finishing 11th overall from the fast section with a time of 18:28.85, while Atlee from the slow section (3rd in their section) finished 12th overall with a time of 18:29.01.

Girls 4xMile - Despite running only one potential "A" team member (if not any) of a stacked 4xmile relay for them, the Lake Braddock girls exhibited their great depth of distance runners by nearly sneaking onto the All-American podium with their seventh place time of 22:27.79. Lake Braddock's #5-9 fastest milers averaged 5:36 per leg, which most schools wish they could have just for their #1-4 fastest milers.

Girls 200 Prelims - Tania Minkins of Menchville qualified for the finals of the 200 meter dash in her winning her heat with a time of 24.74.

Saturday Brief Preview

What to look forward to today? Lizzie Powell of Patrick Henry, a returning NSIC All-American, is back to see if she can better her 2009 performance of a third place finish of 12'6". Powell went 12'7" most recently at the AAA State Meet. Semi-finals action of the 60 meter dash and hurdles with several Virginians still alive and hopeful to move onto Sunday's finals with state champion hurdlers DreQuan Hoskey of Henrico and Chris Dobbins of Christiansburg looking as the strongest in the prelims to make it into the final rounds.

The long duration event of the pentathlon will be contested throughout the day which will feature two great all-around athletes from Virginia in the boys competition with Marques Atkinson and Travis Hudson. Hudson was an All-American yesterday in the high jump. Lake Braddock girls figure to be competitive in the distance relays of the 4xMile and 4x800 with momentum from their DMR runner-up showing last night. Atlee boys will have their three sub 16 minute 5K runners from yesterday led by Andy Hesse running on their 4xMile relay today.
