NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The Big Red women's track and field teams competed in New York City this weekend at the New York Road Runners' "College Saturday Night at the Armory" on Saturday evening, a scored meet featuring Heps rivals Princeton and Columbia, Big East foe Villanova, ACC power Virginia, as well as Albany, Army, and Morgan State. The Cornell women came out on top in the team scoring with 162 points to out-distance second place Virginia by 48 points; Princeton was third with 94.5 points, Villanova was fourth with 92.5 points and Columbia tallied 76 points.
The Cornell women won two events, had 12 top three finishes and produced a season-high 14 ECAC qualifiers to go along with several alterations to the all-time top 10 lists. The Big Red was led by sophomore
Melissa Hewitt, who won the 60 in 7.59 and who was second in the 200 in 24.91, both ECAC qualifiers. Senior
Krystal Williams had a seasonal best (and ECAC qualifying) 7.68 in the prelims before placing third in the 60 final in 7.73. Junior
Mecha Santos continued her break-out season with a seventh place 7.85 in the 60 dash before coming back to place fifth in the 200 in 25.10, an ECAC qualifier. Cornell had another event win from senior co-captain
Jessica Weyman who, fresh off taking the MCAT on Friday, won the 400 in a seasonal best 55.99. Freshman
Libby O'Brien (fourth, 57.15) and sophomore
Kelsey Reimnitz (fifth, 57.29) had very good races as well.
The day got off to a very good start for Cornell in the 1000, the first event of the meet, as the Big Red placed second through fifth. Junior Kim Standridge reached #9 all-time at Cornell with a runner-up showing of 2:51.13. Competing in her first race since last spring, senior
Kerri Lyons ran a fine 2:54.61 for third and junior
Lauren Bariexca had a big PR of 2:55.73 for fourth as all three were well under the ECAC standard. Senior
Lindsay Broyhill also scored, placing fifth in 2:59.98. Senior co-captain
Megan Williams hit the ECAC qualifier for the third straight week in the 500, running 1:15.13 for fourth. Sophomore
Meghan Brown had a very good race, moving up to third in the mile in 4:57.87, an ECAC qualifier. Freshman
Kelsey Karys was fifth in 5:04.61; also scoring was sophomore
Emma Clarke (6th, 5:06.34) and junior
Alana Levy (8th, 5:10.83). Senior co-captain
Stephanie Pancoast ran a personal best 9:47.23 to place 8th in a loaded 3000; running well at the front of the slower section was freshman
Genna Hartung (9:59.81), senior
Erin Roberts (10:01.67) and freshman
Katie Kellner (10:07.15). In the 800, sophomore
Molly Glantz was third in 2:14.87, junior
Anna Scull was sixth in 2:15.08 and sophomore
Bry Bonavita was eighth in 2:17.18. In the 60 hurdles, sophomores Dani Silas and
Taylor Baird made the final, with Silas fifth in a seasonal best 8.97 and Baird sixth in 9.12.
The Cornell women had some terrific showings in the field. Sophomore Sam Brady moved up to a tie for #3 all-time in the pole vault, clearing 11-9 3/4, good enough to qualify for the ECACs while placing fourth. Freshman
Lindsey Patterson was sixth at 11-3 3/4. Sophomore
Kristin Brandt continued to compete well: she placed second in both the long jump (17-11) and triple jump (38-5). Junior Kim Lienhoop was third (17-8 3/4) and sixth (36-9 1/2) while freshman
Savannah Johnson was eighth (15-11 3/4) and seventh (36-9 1/2). In the throws, freshman
Victoria Imbesi was sixth in the shot put at 42-8 1/4.
The relays were also very strong. The women's 4X400 ran a seasonal best of 3:44.92 to place second, behind legs from Reimnitz, Glantz, O'Brien and Weyman. The DMR was third in 12:14.11 with relay carries from senior
Caroline Heidt, Glantz, senior
Jeanell English and sophomore
Janel Parker.
