James Johnston (Middle Island, NY/Longwood) impressed at the NYC Gotham Cup held at The Armory Track and Field Center in New York City. The Seahawks' senior dominated the 1000 meter dash with a top-ten finish and set a new Wagner College Indoor record in the process.
Johnston knocked nearly three seconds off his season-best 1000 meter time with a 2:31.34 finish. The time improved on his previous best of 2:34.6h set at the Fordham Invitational on December 11th. Johnston finished eighth overall in the event, which featured 38 of the top runners in the area.
Johnston's time of 2:31.34 broke a nine-year old record in the event. Wagner Alum Anthony Canova was the previous record holder at 2:31.44 set in 2001.
Other impressive finishes for the Seahawks included senior
Kevin Kearney (Haddonfield, NJ/St. Joe's Prep), sophomore
Zachary Spector (Yaphank, NY/Longwood), and graduate student
Daniel Mercorelli (North Haledon, NJ/De Paul Catholic). Kearney finished third among 38 unseeded athletes 800 meter run. His 1:57.55 finished was the seventh best time overall.
Both Spector and Mercorelli added personal-best finishes in their individual events. Spector finished the 1 Mile Run in 4:31.08, while Mercorelli leaped 6.18 meters in the Long Jump.
Wagner returns to action next Saturday at the Lehigh Invitational.
