CHSAA Boys Recap

Wrap-up

Having your top runner return to the lineup and packing three sophomores into the top 18 can do wonders for a team's fortunes, as Xavier rebounded from last year's surprising 4th place finish and 2nd place two weeks before at the NY-BQ CHSAA championship to claim its third title in four years. The Knights' top guy Oliver Branham-Upton returned in strong form with a 3rd place, and the other six X-Men packed in between the 9th to 21st spots led by sophomores Quincy Flett and Michael Hawkes in 9th and 11th and followed in by Ethan Rice, Percy Moser, Owen Hassler, and Michael Tuffey.

Monsignor Farrell was 25 points back in 2nd at 79 led by Anthony Bentivegna who got edged out for the win at the finish, and Christopher Paxis in 9th led the rest of a Lions' squad that put six guys in the top 30, with four seniors at the top giving their last roar at the championship. Fordham Prep could not quite repeat its winning performance at NY-BQ CHSAA though Niall Ryan won the lean over Bentivegna for 1st and sophomore Myles Hogan was 6th for a Rams' squad that finished with 96 points. Regis led by James Gallagher in 15th edged out St. John the Baptist for 4th, as the Cougars were led by John O'Connell in 10th.

After two straight commanding or comfortable victories by the Friar winners Mason Gatewood in 2017 and Matthew Payamps in 2018, this year's final stretch duel between Ryan and Bentivegna recalled the classic 2016 battle between St. Peter's Ryan Tierney and Xavier's Giancarlo Cipri. Rounding out the top 5 were Xavier's Oliver Branham-Upton and Iona Prep's duo of Pedro Bravo and Brendan Mulvany.
