Records are Broken at Class LL Meet

While the first time a team wins a championship is always special, state titles are always fun no matter how many you win.  The Greenwich Cardinals earned 38 out of a possible 40 points in the relays to take home their first ever Class LL indoor title by defeating FCIAC rival Danbury  85.5 to 71 with Ludlowe taking 3rd, 15 points behind the Hatters.  Meanwhile, on the boys side, the Danbury boys won their 15th class title since 1998 and their 5th straight by defeating Staples 52- 37 with Ridgefield scoring 32 points to give the Fairfield County conference teams a clean sweep of the the top spots in the boys and girls meets.

Five records were broken on Saturday.  Danbury's quartet of Sean-Michael Parkinson,  Glenroy Ford
Malachius Lorick and  Malcolm Going took down their own 4 x 400m record they set last year.  Going was the only member returning which improved to 3:28.77, just over a second faster than the old record.

Southington's Megan Biscoglio  who has committed to UConn broke the Class LL record by an inch, clearing 11'8 in the pole vault.  In the other vertical jumping event, Norwich Free Academy's Allyson Lewis tied the old record in the high jump and had three near misses at 5'6.5.

It is rare when a meet record is broken, but even rarer when two athletes break the old mark in one meet. Fairfield Prep senior Drew Thompson and fellow senior Brendan Murray of Cheshire continued their rivalry from cross country and both broke Christian Alvarado's old mark of 9:25.77.  Thompson had the faster kick and ran 9:17.07 to move up to the 5th fastest time in the country this season.  Murray finished four seconds back to also better the record and earn the tenth best time in the US.  Just as impressive was Danbury's Daniel Nichols who stuck with the pair until the final four laps to earn an indoor personal record with a 9:26.47, less than a second off the record.

Aisha Gay of Hamden had already established her credentials last year when she won the State Open in the 400m last spring.  Meanwhile, of Newtown was a class meet scorers, but nowhere near Gay's level.  Both pushed each other to the line in the 300m and dipped under the old mark of Manchester's Elsa Millet who ran 40.80.   Gay cross the line first in 40.25 with Swierbut only a quarter of a second back.

It is unfortunate that Connecticut has never kept a list of records for each grade.  But if they did Aazan Dawson of Fairfield Prep would sure be close to the All Time record for the freshman 1600m.  He took 5th place overall and ran the 3rd fastest time in the country with a 4:29.25.

Next Saturday, the top 18 best performers from all the Class meets will return to the Floyd Little Track and meet to compete for team and individual State Open championships.  Also on the line will be the coveted spots to the New England championships for the top six finishers at the Open.  Check here to see the State Open start list.

24 performances met the MileSplit US First Team standard.
