Girls Highlights
The New York girls showed up the New York boys as the performances in the second half of the New York State Indoor Championships have been quite impressive with two US #1 performances and a freshmen national record. Lancaster's Melissa Kurzdorfer (pictured right by Tim Fulton) was the current US leader in the shot put and went ahead to improve her season best in the event at Cornell with a big throw of 48'2.25". Kurdorfer, a junior, is now a three-time New York indoor state champion in the event.
The girls distance races have been stellar today as well in Ithaca. Roslyn junior Emily Lipari, the current US leader in the 3K at 9:50, became the nation's fastest at 1500 meters as well with a 4:32.59 victory. 1500 runner-up Shelby Greany of Suffern was just three seconds off Lipari's US #1 time in the 3K as she kicked it in for a strong 9:53 win.
A rising star is found at Colonie High School in freshmen Kyle Plante as she defeated a strong field in the 300 meter dash including previous US #3 performer Chamique Francis with a US #2 38.53 performance. More impressively, her time shattered the high school freshmen national record in the event.
Suffern had another state champion in Jen Clayton, who was successful in her long jump state title defense with a winning leap of 18'9.50".
Hempstead junior Charlene Lipsey was able to reverse the order of finisher between her Phyllis Francis from last year's state indoor championships as Lipsey was the 600 meter dash champion this year defeating the returning champ Francis.
Boys Highlights
Several events have went as expected so far at the New York State Championships in Ithaca, while other races have had unexpected results as one of the nation's best in Terrence Livingston went down with an apparent injury in the 600, while Chris Carrington was disqualified for taking too many steps inside the line after initially winning the 1600 as the fourth seed. Zavior Brown of Pine Bush in the 600 (1:20.67) and Jordan Hamm of Cansisus in the 1600 (4:19.94) were winners as the result of Livingston's injury and Carrington's DQ.
Alex Hatz (pictured left by Tim Fulton of ArmoryTrack.com) of Fayetteville-Manlius had a strong race in the 1000 meter run with his time of 2:27.86, which was just off his US #3 performance of 2:26.44 in his sectional race, but still is a US top 10 performance. Hatz led two others under 2:30 with Tyler Stewart of Colonie (2nd, 2:29.74) and Chris Stogsdill of Marcellus (3rd, 2:29.90) running well to place top 3.
US 300 leader Jermaine Brown of Medgar Evans claimed the 300 meter dash state title as expected in a 34.42 clocking.
Robert Andrews executed a sit and kick strategy to drop a huge personal best of 9:13.67 in his 3200 meter victory with two others under 9:20 in the race.
Swift times posted in the 4x200 by Ramapo as the champions in 1:31.05 and Sheepshead Bay as the runners-up in 1:31.92. Sheepheads Bay's opening leg Darryl Bradshaw won the 55 meter hurdles title in a slight personal best of 7.41.
It was a intensely close race in the 4x800 meter relay between three schools in Warwick Valley, Half Hollow Hills West, and Fordham Prep. All three teams had been under 8 minutes this season, but were over 8 minutes in the state meet with Warwick Valley as the close winners at 8:05.20.
Newburgh Free Academy with the nation's second fastest 4x400 at 3:18 were convincing winners in the relay event with a two second margin of victory in a time of 3:24.58.
The pole vault and high jump both had matching heights for their top two athletes with earlier misses deciding the champions with Hilton's Eric Fontanez edging out Greece Olympia's Jerry Ntumba at 6'8" in the high jump, while Jake Platel of Bethlehem had less earlier misses than Adam Helman of Grand Island in the pole vault with both clearing 6'8".
