Rising senior Maazin Ahmed (Schenectady) took the trip out to Michigan to contest for the 17-18 year old division at the AAU Junior Olympic Games. Ahmed was in fourth coming into the bell lap, but unleashed a strong kick in the final lap to capture the win. Ahmed also led a NY 1-2 sweep, with Derrick Simmons (Poly Prep Country Day) taking second overall.
Ahmed struggled with injury this Spring, but managed to take second at the Section 2 State Qualifier. However, not having the qualifying standard, Ahmed shifted his focus to AAU. He ran a 4:15.32 to win the Region 1 qualifier, and came away with a 4:02.97 to win the AAU title. The mark is just short of his PR of 4:02.70, run at the Warrior Track Classic earlier this year.
