Look 3: Who Won at Boys Outdoor Nationals?

The Jersey guys were tops at the indoor nationals by a comfortable margin, but as June rolled around the question was whether they would still be alive and kicking for a repeat at outdoor nationals. The answer turned out to be yes, though this time the battle at the top was very close down in North Carolina. The NJ boys were consistent, scoring 110 points following their 111 output for indoors, and again they were led by an East Orange team that won the 4x400 and the shuttle hurdle relays. Rey Rivera chipped in a 1st in the 800 meters, and the Jersey guys piled up five 2nd places to complete the sweep of the national titles.

The New York guys had a much better showing at outdoor nationals, finishing just 6 points behind NJ in 2nd with 104 points. Dan Claxton won the high jump and Northport won the 4x800 to give NY some power at the top. But NY also had a lot of depth with three 2nd places including Jovahn Williamson in the 800 meters, Brian Baccaglini in the 3K race walk, and Northport again in the distance medley relay, plus five 3rds from Onye Ohia-Enyia in the 400, Newburgh in the 4x400, Mount Vernon in the Swedish relay, Michael Feldman in the hammer throw, and Kyle Rollins with a huge finish in the decathlon.

A ways back from the top two states, there was a great battle for 3rd place. Virginia got just one 1st with a win by Western Branch in the 800 sprint medley relay, but the Old Dominion guys added four 2nds and three 3rds to finish with 78.5 points. A little way back in 4th at 76 was a Pennsylvania group that got 1sts from Jordan Geist in the shot put and hammer throw and Ayden Owens in the decathlon along with a win by Germantown Friends in the distance medley relay. Florida was 5th with 67 points, the bulk of it coming from Tyrese Cooper's wins in the 200 and 400 meters to repeat his indoor titles, Anthony Schwartz's 1st in the 100 and 2nd in the 200, and Thomas Burns' win in the 400 hurdles.

There would be no real mystery about which state was on tops for the boys for the indoor and outdoor combined score at the nationals.
