War of the States, or the Empire State Strikes Back

Look 2: Who Won at Girls Indoor Nationals?

The New York girls definitely  got the SOS signal from the boys in their half of the War of the States competition. New Jersey got a 1st from Olympian Sydney McLaughlin in the 400 meters, Alyssa Wilson in the shot put, and the Ridge 4x800 team, but it was a state from further south that was the biggest challenge to NY. The Virginia girls got 1sts from Rachel McArthur in the 800 meters, Nansemond River in the 4x200, and Western Branch in the 4x55 shuttle hurdle relay on the way to 21 places and 94 points and a runner-up finish.

The NY girls got started on what would be another huge year at Nationals by taking five wins at the Armory. Sammy Watson in the Mile and Lauren Harris in the Mile race walk joined weight throw stand-out Jill Shippee and the North Rockland distance medley and Shoreham-Wading River 4xMile relay teams on the top of the podium. NY also gobbled up four 2nds (Halle Hazzard, Kaitlin Ryan, Caroline Timm, Jessica Lawson) and ten 3rds to run away from the rest of the states. 21 points from the 4xMile relay and 20 points in both the Mile and the Mile race walk events helped to really boost the girls' huge 163 point score.

New York finished 69 points better than 2nd place Virginia, but was it enough for the combined boys and girls squads to finish on top? Well, that question is answered in the final section that looks at five different scoring combinations for the 2017 nationals.
