Look 2: Who Won at Outdoors?


At the recently completed outdoor States, Section 11 just flat out steamrolled the competition at the Federation level. It began with the boys, who picked up 124 points, but the Suffolk girls were not far behind. Leading the way for S11 were steeplechasers Jonathan Lauer and Michael Grabowski with a 1-2 finish and 18 points, high jumpers Daniel Claxton and Nakia Williams with a 1st and 3rd for 16, Kyree Johnson and Jovahn Williamson in the 400 meters with another 1-3 finish, the shot putters Dan Byrnes and Chris Fasano with a 2nd and 4th for 12 points, plus 100 meter champ Nigel Green and the 4x800 winning Northport squad.  Throw in 2nd place finishes from Christopher Tibbetts in the 1600 and Huntington in the 4x400 and you have a juggernaut.

Section 5 was 55 points behind in 2nd at 69 off of a pentathlon win by Kyle Rollins and another state championship from Ben Bulkeley, this time in the 800 meters. Noah Williams and Brandon Burke chipped in 2nds in the 200 meters and high jump respectively for S5. The other section to break 60 was S9 powered by 18 points from a 1-2 finish of Robert Walker and Michael Mullally in the 400 hurdles and a win by Newburgh's 4x400 team. Mullally also took 2nd in the 110 high hurdles, and Richard Samuels gave S9 a 2nd in the 800 meters.

Section 6 was 4th with 56 points led by Sweet Home and Niagara Falls going 1st and 5th in the 4x100 relay, Nathaniel Davis's win in the 200 meters, Anton Kunnas's completion of the indoor-outdoor titles in the pole vault, and Paul Kemsley's win in the discus. Section 1 was another point back in 5th at 55 points led by Jack Zimmerman's shot put win and discus 2nd, and by a 2nd-3rd finish from Ryan Gallagher and Greg Fusco in the 3200 for 14 points.

The Section 11 girls mirrored the guys, running almost 20 points ahead of the nearest competition.  Triple jumpers Serena Choi amd Mia Abulencia put up 16 points with a 1-3 finish, Sade Meeks and Brittany Curtin earned 14 points with a 1st and 4th in the shot put and Curtin added a 1st in the discus, West Babylon and Brentwood took 1st and 5th in the 4x400 relay for 12 points, and Shoreham-Wading River teammates Katherine Lee and Alexandra Hays finished 2nd and 5th in the 3000 meters, and Lee added a 3rd in the 1500.

Section 1 was 2nd at 93.5 points behind a 1-3 finish by Alex Harris and Mary Hennelly in the 2000 steeplechase, a 1st and 4th from Katelyn Tuohy and Caroline Timm in the 1500 meter, a 2nd-3rd combo by Bronxville and John Jay-Cross River in the 4x800 relay, a 2-4-6 finish by Kaitlin Ryan, Caroline Timm, and Lily Flynn in the 800 meters, and Kendall Bensche and Jummie Akunwunmi taking 2nd and a tie for 5th in the high jump.

Section 5 was in at 3rd with 73 points powered by the three wins by Lane-Tava Thomas's wins in the 100, 200 and long jump and Emily Lavarnway's pentathlon win. In 4th at 68 was the PSAL thanks to a 1st and 4th from Sophia Myers and Rondela Spooner in the 100 high hurdles, a 1st and 5th by Paris Peoples and Shenelle Tomlinson in the 400 meters, and a win by MY Khiyah Williams in the high jump. Rounding out the top 5 was Section 2 at 60 points led by Hannah Reale's 800 meter win.

Winning on both the boys and girls sides, Section 11 dominated in the combined tally with a huge 237 score.  As at indoors, Section 1 was 2nd with a score of 148.5, but a balanced Section 5 was very close behind in 3rd at 142.  Section 9 edged out the PSAL for the 4th spot by a score of 107 to 101.
