We recently ran a story lamenting the lack of Shot Putters over the 60-foot barrier. That was, of course, before Jeff Derwin of Broadlbin-Perth broke the magic barrier on April 22nd of this year.
Well, since then, the floodgates have opened. Two more athletes had lifetime best throws over 60-feet for the first time this spring. Jack Zimmerman (Briarcliff) did so at the Westchester County Champs, throwing 60-1.75. Then, just a few days later, Indoor State Champ Danny Byrne (Kings Park) crested the magic mark with a 60--2.5 throw.
That now marks three throwers in a single year. Only in 2014 and 2015 were there as many in a single year, and only in 2014 were there three in a single season. The trio will be sure to meet up at the State Meet head-to-head-to-head, and who knows who could join the elite club.
