For High School Track & Field, certain marks denote the difference between good and great. The 60-foot Boys Shot Put throw is one example we brought up earlier in the year. Since writing the article, we've had one more addition to the list, as Jack Zimmerman of Briarcliff has surpassed 60-ft as well.
But while the Boys Shot Putters are trying to get over sixty, it's the Girls 400m Hurdlers who are trying to get under it. That's in seconds, the magic mark for their event. In the past seventeen years, New York has only had three years where a girl hasn't broken it. Before this weekend, no girl had gotten under 1:02.00. At the Brookyln Burrough Champs, BryAnn Sandy of Robeson dipped under that mark, but still falls short of the magic 60seconds. Sandy is the younger sister to Alyssa, who carried the tradition back in 2015 and 2016. Another notable name on the list is Dalilah Muhhammad (Benjamin Cardozo), the only girl to break 60 three years running. She went on to win Olympic Gold in the event this Summer, at the Rio Olympics, running 52.88. Louise Jones of Nyack is the other big threat for the mark, with a best of 1:02.55.
