It was one heck of a meet for the Junior from Rush-Henrietta. Lanae-Tava Thomas put out three State Leading marks in one day, all of which will stand as Section 5 records. However, there is a catch.
None of the marks will enter the record books. Section 5 does not use a wind-gauge, which is required for any marks below 400m, or in the horizontal jumps, to be eligible for records consideration. This is because they can give a significant advantage over a certain threshold, the international standard being 2.0 meters-per-second.
Still, the day remains a significant feat. Thomas once again cleared the 21-foot barrier in the Long Jump. It would have been an overall state record, if a wind-gauge was utilized. Thomas won the event in 21-0, good for US #3. Thomas leapt 21-3 last summer, but the mark was set again, without a wind-gauge. The State Record is tied between three athletes at 20-10.75, although the All-Conditions record is held by Keyon Soley at 21-6.75.
Once on the track, Thomas was back in form after an Indoor Season with minor injury. She won the 100m in 11.66, good for New York #1, just ahead of Halle Hazzard (St. Anthony's). The mark would have been good for NY #6 All-Time, but will not count. Hazzard, who ran 11.67 at CARIFTA, currently holds that spot because the competition used a wind-gauge. Thomas' legal best is an 11.82.
Rounding out the day, Thomas came back with a 23.61 to win the 200m. That mark would also have been NY #6 All-Time. However, Thomas already holds NY #4, with her personal best of 23.58 from New Balance Nationals.
