Selection of the All Long Island Indoor Track and Field Athletes

Plainview, NY - Representatives from the Nassau and Suffolk County Track Coaches Associations, NSCHSSA and USATF Long Island have come together to select the All Long Island athletes for the indoor track and field season. Performances throughout the season were analyzed, debated and discussed with an emphasis placed on achievements in the championship meets (County/Intersectional, State, Nationals) and the Long Island Elite Invitational.

Three athletes were selected for each individual running and field event to comprise 1st, 2nd and 3rd team All Long Island. Athletes who could have qualified for selections in multiple events were assigned one selection in their most outstanding event. The committee also has awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd All Long Island selections in the 4x200, 4x400, 4x800, sprint and distance medley relays.

The 2016-2017 indoor track and field season was a highly successful one for Long Island, highlighted by the committee's selection of the two most outstanding athletes in Daniel Claxton (Smithtown East HS) and Halle Hazzard (St. Anthony's HS).

Literally soaring above the competition was Daniel Claxton who managed to surpass the monstrous seven foot barrier in the high jump twice this season. In doing so, he became the first New Yorker to have achieved the feat since James Blocker (August Martin HS) twelve years ago! This season, Claxton took home the invitational high jump titles from the Molloy Stanner Games and Ocean Breeze Invitational, where his first seven foot performance of the season came. He then went on to win the Suffolk County and New York State Championships in the event before placing 3rd at the New Balance Indoor National Championship Meet earning All-American status on a three-way tie breaker. His clearance in that meet of a personal best 7-0 ¼ was tied for 2nd in the United States this season and established a new Suffolk County record.

Meanwhile on the track, Halle Hazzard sprinted away from any and all competition fast enough to make one of her many finals from this season. At the conclusion of her indoor season, Hazzard held Top 10 times in the country in four different events with performances of 6.84 in the 55m (US #3), 7.36 in the 60m (US #3), 23.99 in the 200 (US #9) and 38.67 in the 300 (US #8). At the NY State Championships, Hazzard attained victory in the 55 and 300, a feat she also managed to claim three other times this season (CHSSA Intersectional Championships, NSCHSSA League Championships and Ocean Breeze Freedom Games). Her performance of 6.84 in the 55 that day was just .02 shy of Keyon Soley's (Uniondale HS) state record of 6.82 from 1991. Hazzard capped off her season at the New Balance Indoor National Championships with 2nd place finish in the 60m to earn All-American status. She also placed 7th in the 200m at the Nationals to go along with her 55m invitational victories at the Molloy Stanner Games, Yale Track Classic, Long Island Elite Meet and Eastern States Championships this year.

The Long Island Track and Field Coaches Association would like to congratulate all of these outstanding athletes on a memorable and successful indoor track and field campaign. Future All Long Island selections for cross-country and track and field will be made annually after the conclusion of each season.
