The Oregon Women and the Texas A&M Men took home the NCAA Titles this past weekend at the NCAA D1 Championships, and there were plenty of New York athletes in there making headlines.
The most controversial performance of them all has to go to Deajah Stevens (Oregon, Benjamin Cardozo '14). In the 200m Prelims, Olympian Stevens set a new Collegiate Record, running 22.28, but was later DQ'ed for stepping on the line. The mark would have also been a new American Record, if it had stood. But Stevens picked herself up, and came back to 5th in the 60m Dash, as well as aiding Oregon's 4x400m.
Speaking of relays, the Colorado Women did something unexpected. One of the last seeds in the race, behind Collegiate Record Holder Oregon, the Buff's DMR took home the gold medal. Included in the relay of two freshman and two sophomores, was Sage Hurta (Hamilton '16). Hurta split a personal best 2:05.02 to put her team within striking distance.
Lastly, Collegiate Record Holder Jazmine Fray (Kellenberg '15) contested a heated 800m, taking 4th overall at 2:03.00. She was part of the home team, as Texas A&M saw the NCAA Championships contested on home turf. That proved fruitful for her boys team, who took home their first title ever. Alumni like Richard Rose and Infinite Tucker make up key components of the win.
One notable absence at the competition was Rutger's Izaiah Brown (Amsterdam '15), who for the second year in a row, had to pull out with injury after clocking an NCAA Top 3 performance the week before. More on that here.
