A Record Breaking Day For The New York Indoor State Meet - Full Recap

Girls 3000m

Event Info: 2016 Winner: Kaitlyn Neal (Fayetteville-Manlius) 9:29.85, State Record: 9:04.51 (standard track), 9:02.10 (oversized track) Meet Record: 9:29.85, State Qualifier Mark (FAT): 10.21.14

State of the Action:  It was a valiant effort for Amanda Vestri, who clicked off even splits among little company for much of the race.  Her time would have won many a state meet, twice in the last five years.  But sophomore Kelsey Chmiel was on a mission.  After taking runner-up in the fastest 3000m State Meet race ever last year, Chmiel was looking to drop a big performance.  Consider that achieved, as she put on a clinic of running, lapping everyone in the field, except for Vestri.

Notable Marks:

The time would dip just under that outstanding meet record set last year.  It would also take down the sophomore National Record, set back in 1974.  This would be in addition to the Freshman National Record Chmiel set in the same race last year.  The mark now stands as NY #3 All-Time.
