A Record Breaking Day For The New York Indoor State Meet - Full Recap

Event Info: 2016 Winner: Diana Vizza (North Shore) 4:31.67, State Record: 4:07.05, Meet Record: 4:24.25, State Qualifier Mark (FAT): 4:49.54

State of the Action:  The marquee race of the day didn't disappoint.  All the relevant names were there, and then some.  The action boiled down to freshman Katelyn Tuohy bolting from the gun, and running her own race well ahead of the competition.  She lead by a full two seconds through the first 1200m, but then the pack started to make up the ground.

The chase pack was seeing it's own battle for dominance.  Jess Lawson paced the following pair through the first 800m, but was finding some struggle through those middle meters.  Sophie Ryan stuck on Lawson, expecting to respond to a move that didn't come until much later.  With the pair was Anna Kostarellis, who took over leading duties through that middle section.  As the trio gained on Tuohy, Lawson sensed the opportunity.

Hit 200m to go, and Lawson is only a step behind Tuohy.  The freshman noticed the danger, and picked the pace up again.  But as Lawson has been known to have done, she kicked it in with 150m to go. Tuohy, who had responded to Sammy Watson last spring, kicked with her, holding the inside line for as long as she could.  Despite running the longer line, Lawson kept it shoulder to shoulder with 30m to go.  There, one final surge was issued to close out the race, and secure the win.
