The Great State Meet Preview - Indoor 2017

Girls 1500m

Event Info: 2016 Winner: Diana Vizza (North Shore) 4:31.67, State Record: 4:07.05, Meet Record: 4:24.25, State Qualifier Mark (FAT): 4:49.54

State of the Action:  There are two types of previews we could write out for this race.  One that includes Sammy Watson, and one that does not.  Currently, she has upgraded her status at USA Senior Indoors to "declared," which means she has intention to run the 1000m against the professionals on the same day as states.  With the scratch meeting on Friday, we won't know her status until then,

In her absence, you still have the best race of the meet, in either gender.  Jess Lawson's status at States was in question for much of the season.  After running her seed time in early December, she became injured.  Her journey back to competition started late January, and has steadily been coming back.  She clocked another sub-4:30 at her State Qualifier, so consider her seed to be legit.  Sophie Ryan finds herself in the Top 10 in all events 600m and up, so the 1500m is the sweet spot.  She's clocked two marks in the past three weeks at 4:31 or better, and could give chase to Lawson.  And then there is Katelyn Tuohy, who recently went 2:47 for 1000m.  Just how that will translate to the 1500m is up for debate, but Tuohy was runner-up last Spring in this event, clocking an incredible 4:24.36.  Consider her capable of that.

Tuohy and Ryan are both grinders.  Expect them to go out hard, clocking off even splits.  Lawson has been a kicker the past four years, but with the race distance dropped from her usual 3000m, she may be in the mix a lot sooner than usual.  Given the right race, any three of these girls could win.  Tuohy is right on the meet record with her personal bets, and it could go in this field.  This should make for a great race.

If Watson is entered, it changes the whole dynamic of the race.  Watson hasn't lost outright since her sophomore year.  She won the State Meet with ease last Spring, relying on a kick, as well as strength throughout.  If she runs, the top seeds will have to try and run the kick out of her legs.  Not an easy task, as no High Schooler has been able to do so in quite some time.
