The Great State Meet Preview - Indoor 2017

Girls 1000m

Event Info: 2016 Winner: Sammy Watson (Rush-Henrietta Sperry) 2:51.33, State Record: 2:35.80, Meet Record: 2:48.44, State Qualifier Mark (FAT): 3:02.24

State of the Action: The top four athletes in this event have done their best all season to separate from the rest of the state.  Heading into States, it looks like four girls have set themselves up to run around 2:50 or better, what it's going to take to be in contention for the win.

Kaitlin Ryan, last Spring's 800m runner-up, has solidified herself as the favorite.  All five of her marks from this year are under the second seed, and two of those have broke 2:50.  She looked strong at her qualifier, and comes in as NY #4 All-Time in the event.

But the race isn't over.  Lily Flynn and Alex Harris both gave chase at the qualifier.  Flynn is an underclassmen, with plenty of upside in the right race.  Harris, on the other hand, was runner-up to Sammy Watson last Indoor States, and a 2:51.23 personal best with her.  And Hannah Reale is known to be a gamer, diving for the line to win a Penn Relays 4x800m title last spring.  A sit-and-kick race makes this race a toss-up.  An all out sprint, and Ryan could take a shot at the Meet Record.
