Chenango Valley Provides Great Championship Battleground - State Meet Recap

Girls Class A Individuals

State of the Action: At 800m, the field realized something.  Kelsey Chmiel wasn't coming back to them.  Chmiel had shot out from the gun with emphasis, and was dropping the field by full meters at 800m.  By one mile, her lead had increased, pushing herself further than anyone could challenge.  The race was hers if she continued to push, and that she did, all the way through the line.  She shattered the course record by nine seconds, grabbing what was once thought to be an untouchable record.

The race behind was anything but decided.  Katelyn Tuohy was leading Jess Lawson, a reversal of roles from the Pre-State Invite.  Flanking Lawson were three from Manlius, sure to add pressure to any race.  Lawson held the current course record, but had been recovering from a cold early in the week.  In a field that held any number of National Title threats, any minor distraction can be race altering.  Tuohy pushed hard through the line, breaking her own freshman course record in the process.  Lawson took third, only 6 seconds off what had been the course record the year before.
