Mikey Brannigan Breaks World Record, Heads To Rio

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (July 3, 2016) -- Mikey Brannigan, formerly of Northport High School in New York and now a professional athlete with the New York Athletic Club, broke his own Paralympic T-20 World Record in the 1500m on Saturday at the U.S. Paralympic Team Trials to punch his ticket to Rio for the Paralympic Games.

Brannigan ran 3:50.05 for 1500m to finish more than 40 seconds ahead of the next competitor, according to the USOC report. The mark was fast enough to break his own world record, previously set at 3:51.35 at the Triton Invite, hosted by the University of California-San Diego in April.

He won gold at the IPC Athletics World Championships last summer in the 1500m and enters Rio as the favorite.
