The last event of the week for New Yorkers, and Starpoint senior Sam Wray made it count. While he did not make the team for Poland, he walks away with a fine consolation prize: a New York State Record. USATF Juniors is conducted with the international weight for Discus (utilized in the US by Collegians and Professionals.) The HS implement is 1.6 kilograms, while the heavier weight stands at 2 kilograms.
Wray would take 5th overall in the competition. On his third throw, his mark of 183-2 would stand as his furthest, although he had four throws over the current state record. The record stemmed from the Empire State Games, once the king of post-season meets. Held by Tony Washington in 1985, the mark stood for as long as it did because of the rarity the event is contested. That proves to be good news for Wray, who may hold on to it for quite some time.
