Sammy Watson Captures Pre Classic Prep 400m To Cap Off Week at Nike Elite Sprint Camp

Eugene, OR - The season is starting to ramp up for those with eyes past the local competition.  For Sammy Watson, two goals are on the horizon: World U20 Champs (formerly World Juniors), or the Olympic Trials.  Neither are a stretch for the reigning world youth champion over 800m, and the sky is the limit for Watson's potential in both the 400m and 1500m as well.

Those credentials and more nabbed Watson an invite to the Nike Elite Sprint Camp.  The Sprint camp, a more recent addition to the traditional Nike Elite Distance Camp, was held the past week in Eugene, Oregon.  As a conclusion to their stay, the athletes were able to race an exhibition race at the Prefontaine Classic, traditionally one of the most loaded Invitationals in the Diamond League.

Coming in with the slowest season best (but one of the top PR's), Watson showed her speed by running a season's best of 53.21.  In doing so, she overcame the US #2, #3, and #5 athletes in the country at that distance, also in the race.

Next, all eyes turn back to New York State, and the age old question of, "What will Watson do at the State Meet?"  Last year, she won both the 400m and 1500m at the State Meet, both in top times for NYS.  This year, with the U20 qualifier so close to the State Meet, Watson may be pulled to the 800m instead.  Only time will tell for the junior from Rush-Henrietta, but one thing is sure: Whatever race she chooses, it will be fast.
