Kate Murphy Runs National 1K Record, Mom Goes Crazy

Kate Murphy ran 2:45.36 for 1K on Saturday, the second-fastest time in U.S. prep history behind only fellow Virginian Sarah Brown, neƩ BowmanThe junior from Lake Braddock set the National Junior Class Record at the Ocean Breeze Freedom Games at the new Ocean Breeze Track & Field Facility in Staten Island, New York.

The best part of the video may be the videographer -- that's Mama Murphy, who gives some priceless commentary as she watches her daughter nearly break the national record.

The time is less than two seconds off Bowman's standard of 2:43.4, set in 2005 at the Virginia State Championship. Bowman passed through 800m in 2:08 on that day; Murphy ran the half mile in about 2:12 -- with a more aggressive start, the record is certainly within reach this season. The performance distinguishes Murphy as a U.S. All-Time Top 10 prep in two different events: she ranks the No. 10 All-Time in the 1500m, with her PR of 4:16.98.
