State of the Action
It is hard to talk about track in New York without bringing up the depth of the 4x800m in the past century. 2015 was no different as every team was in the hunt for the title as different stages of the race. With different relays throwing their big guns on different legs, the race had an ebb and flow. East Aurora and Cornwall front loaded their relays, with 2:15 legs on the front. Burnt Hills threw down a 2:14 on their second leg to get back in the game. 8th grade North Rockland's Kaitlyn Tuohy and Elmira's Abbey Wheeler threw down in the third legs. At the final exchange, six teams came across within a five second gap. They took off, just as Suffern was handing the baton to standout Kam McIntosh. However, the gap had already formed, and her 2:04.75 leg would only make up the gap to second, with a lean at the line. That is because Bronxville's Kaitlyn Ryan put in a 2:09.13 leg from the front of the leadpack, pulling away from the field. Ryan had been a top seed in the D2 800m before not contesting the event at the Qualifier, a choice that paid off in dividends at the State Championship.
