Under some difficult wet and cool conditions, a few spots on the course were a bit tricky, but there were still a number of fast times and quality races.

State of the Action:

The individual race proved to be one of the most exciting of the day with a back and forth battle between top state ranked Carly Benson and Abbey Wheeler. Benson led with a gap of a few seconds over Wheeler through the first half of the race. Going up the hilly middle part of the course Wheeler closed the gap and took over the lead with just over 800m to go. They entered the back loop with Wheeler looking in control of the race with Benson on her heels. When they came out of the back loop into the finish straight they had swapped again. A big late surge from Benson dropped Wheller, and the West Genesee runner was able to extend her lead all the way to the line.

The team race appeared much closer than it actually was. West Genesee ran well with their Top-5 all running ahead of Elmira's #2 runner through the early parts of the race. The important note being that Elmira's #2 was also their 3,4,5,6, as their pack went out very easy at the start. They cruised through much of the course, only turning on the jets at the end to work their way through the race to a winning positons. All Elmira's scorers finished in the Top-10.  It would appear as if the Elmira crew is playing it smart, saving themselves for bigger races in the future, such as a matchup with Corning at Sectionals, and the rest of the state the week after, if they make it.

The D II teams were very closely spaced. Section 4 Class C Watkings Glen and Newark Valley have run neck and neck all season. While Newark Valley was placed higher in the overall results, led by Kayla Stewart in 6th, Watkins Glen took the narrow win in the Division II split. The Sectional race will be very interesting between the 2. NV has the edge with their two lead runners, but WG has more depth in their 3-5 runners.

State of the Action:

Noah Affolder entered the race as the overwhelming favorite with his sole challenger Dan Schaffer from Maine-Endwell. Schaffer has been running well, but his team has stayed in Section 4 all season, and the only time he ran a contested race was at McDaniel-Baxter in early September where he finished 2nd to Dan Dracup. Schaffer put in a strong race, running step for step with Affolder through 3000m. Through the hilly section of the course Affolder made his move and opened up a small gap. He was able to hold that to the finish in 16:01. Now ranked 5th on the Marathon All Time list. Right behind Lopez Lomong. With a few more years left, we shall see if Affolder comes back for the course record- 15:39.1, held by Chris Stogsdill.

With Noah's younger brother Sam finishing a very impressive 5th as an 8th grader, the two led the Carthage squad to the team win. Will Randall and David Leff ran well through the closing parts of the race to move up and help West Genesee narrowly beat Maine Endwell for 2nd.

The Division II race was another showdown between a loaded Class C group in Section 4. It came down to a tie breaker for Oneonta to win over Watkins Glen, and Newark Valley was just 2 points back.

State of the Action:

Taking his time through the early stages of the race, Garrett Butters calmly worked his way through the pack, established a lead, then just held that gap to the finish. His teammate Matt Karee had a good 2nd half and gave Elmira Notre Dame a 1-2 finish. On their home course, the best placed Marathon finisher was Dylan Brickner in 9th.

Ithaca ran their Varsity B team, which won easily, and could've been up in the seeded race and placed well there. Windsor finished ahead of Chenango Forks for 2nd. Add these two teams to the other Class C schools in the seeded race, and you have a very exciting 5 way battle in the Sectional race.

State of the Action:

Chase Yoder led from the gun and tried to complete the Elmira Notre Dame sweep of the unseeded races, but Emily Cluck wouldn't let her get away. Cluck shadowed her through the early stages, then made her move and was able to hold off Yoder to the finish. Coming off a win at the Whitney Point on Tuesday, Cluck goes 2 for 2 this week.

Seton Catholic had good races from their 1-3 runners, placing them all in the Top-10, but they lack the depth in their final scorers to impact the team scores. West Genesee won overall with their B team, and Cluck led her Johnson City team to 2nd.
