2014 Season Overview for Class B
2014 has already seen a big shakeup in Class B, and this year's States meet will have a lot of new faces at the top despite the fact that two-thirds of the top 20 returning runners are seniors. The top four finishers at the States meet from 2013 are gone either to graduation, or in the case of reigning champ Jessica Lawson of Corning and runner-up Sophia Tasselmyer now on East Aurora, off to different classes. The movement and graduations have left Class B with very little depth at the team level beyond the top ten usual powerhouses. But this should be perhaps the most competitive and exciting of the team competitions at States, because in preseason the top 5 teams sport TR average ratings of less than 5 points apart. Last year Queensbury roared to the finish and became the first team to win a States title on its home course as the runners fed off the big crowd support there. This year the Spartans(Q) have nearly everyone back with the big exception of number 2 runner Megan Kellogg for the sectional and state battles, so the Spartans(BH) of Burnt Hills actually get the top preseason rating in Section 2 and the state because they have their top ten runners back. Throw in Holy Names behind stars Kaylee Scott and Lydia Williams, and you have the usual high-class rhubarb fight in S2-B. Section 1 also has a big fight looming between Pearl River and John Jay-Cross River after the Pirates won the S1-B title while the Indians took the Federation championship last year. Pearl River was certainly hit harder by losses especially with frontrunner Kelly Hayes' graduation, but they are also a deeper team and have another potential star with a first name of Mary hitting the trails this year. The battle for the individual title in States Class B will almost certainly involve some new faces like last year when Jessica Lawson stormed the scene. Among the known members of the elite fighting for the crown are likely to be Holly Names' Kaylee Scott, the top returning States finisher, along with Garden City's Stephanie Gerland and a host of others who have been running at the top including Brockport's A-transplant Autumn Albrecht, Sweet Home's Ally Ortega, and Cornwall's Beatrice Boylan. |

Section by Section Class B Overview
Section | Top Teams | Notes
1 | Pearl River, John Jay-Cross River, Tappan Zee, Nanuet | Again one of the poster-child examples of the inadequate state qualification system. the S1-B battle features the deep reigning sectional champ Pearl River team and the top-loaded Federation champ John Jay-Cross River
2 | Burnt Hills, Queensbury, Academy of the Holy Names | Holy Names enters the season as the top rated team in the state in a very competitive S2-B, but Burnt Hills always has huge depth and will seize any opportunity to get a title.
3 | Jamesville-Dewitt, New Hartford | The departure of Westhill to Class C leaves Jamesville-Dewitt as the favorite, but New Hartford has much of its team back and should be close.
4 | Maine-Endwell, Vestal, Johnson City | The departure of Corning back to Class A after one quick title likely throws the ball back to a deeper Maine-Endwell squad.
5 | Pittsford Mendon, Honeoye Falls-Lima, Mercy, Pittsford-Sutherland | Pittsford Mendon lost half the top varsity to graduation, but it still appears to have the edge over rising HFL team.
6 | Sweet Home, Hamburg, Starpoint | Sweet Home has a strong top trio back and should be able to find some depth to replace the departed East Aurora at the head of S6-B.
7 | Peru | Gotta be Peru for the 7th straight year.
8 | North Shore, Garden City, Wantagh | North Shore's deeper pack has the edge over Garden City's top-level power.
9 | Cornwall, Port Jervis, Goshen | Cornwall should be well ahead of the other teams in S9-B.
10 | Franklin | Franklin is the one.
11 | Miller Place, Shoreham-Wading River, Bayport-Blue Point | Miller Place still appears to have an edge despite the loss of Tiana and Talia Guevara, but SWR and BBP could make a run if they can field some depth. |

Burnt Hills as usual has the most returning runners with 100+ TRs of any team in the state with 10, but the question is whether the top 5 can push themselves past the 120 mark for the expected showdown with Queensbury and Holy Names in S2-B. States runner Emily Digman along with frontrunners Eva Scott and Jordan Casey the team's leader at Sectionals, Janelle Rothacker, seems to put the Spartans in a very good spot.
Queensbury's Emily Guinther helped drive the Spartans to their 5th States championship with a 16th and will be the senior leader in 2014.

Queensbury is not as deep as their rival Spartans Burnt Hills, but they put together the best top 7 last year to get to States, and the last time the team has gone to states, it's won the championship. Queensbury has a couple of spots to fill on a team composed mainly of freshmen and seniors, but with Emily Guinther, Danielle Soprano, and Sherri Metcalfe returning, a repeat States title is a distinct possibility.

Longtime leader Kelly Hayes is gone from the Pirate crew that was 2nd at States, but Pearl River's recruitment campaign has again made sure that the team is loaded going into a new season. The new frontrunners may be Ailish Durcan and Catherine Rayward, but 8th-grade newcomer could be running far above the conservative projected TR here when she's broken in the trails a bit, and it would not be a surprise to see the Pirates on top of the Class B rankings this year as the young team makes a leap.

This Year's Outlook The number of times a Class B team has been denied a place at States and then won the Federation meet is less than 1, though Saratoga did it twice, and now John Jay - Cross River has to feed off both the high of its Feds finish and the frustration of the Sectionals result to push to the next level in 2014. The top quartet of Isabelle Page, Gemma Nutall and Kathryn and Brooke Nohilly is very strong, but the Indians will need more strength at the back to overtake a surging Pearl River team. And for a team that has done well at Bowdoin Park, it is odd that the Indians' twins have such a stated aversion to hills. |

The 2013 season was a trying one for Holy Names as injuries and defections of some runners back to their starting point at Saratoga turned everything upside down and sent the preseason top-rated team in the state spinning back to 3rd place finish in S2-B. Sweet Home's two big roadblocks in S6-B have been cleared out with East Aurora moving to Class C and Starpoint looking a little dim in 2014, but it will still need to develop some depth to hold off an expected challenge from Hamburg. The top trio of Ally Ortega, Aileen Doyle, and Sam Peterman had a generally fine 2013 with Doyle picking up a States medal, so the front line should be in good shape.

This Year's Outlook | |||||
The final year when both of the Gerland sisters will be leading Garden City has come, and both Stephanie and Jennifer should continue to do well and maybe pick up a pair of States medals and possibly a state championship for junior Stephanie. Behind the top Trojan duo the ranks are not deep however, and the team will need a big influx of young runners to catch North Shore in S8-B.

The loss of frontrunner Rachel Fairbanks to injury in midseason last year was a tough blow for the Red Rams, but the loss of Westhill to Class C in Section 3 is probably viewed cheerfully by the team. Now the big favorite in the S3-B race, JD needs Fairbanks to stay healthy and States runner Emilee Carpenter to help provide a strong duo for the Rams.

This Year's Outlook Usually a team that finished 5th in S5-B would not be rated among the top teams in the state the next season, but Hamburg has everyone back on a squad with some fast developing youngsters, and the sectional scene has changed hugely in the Bulldogs' favor. It will still be a tall order catching Sweet Home, but sophomore Olivia Lothringer and senior Erin Cuddihy give Hamburg a good base for their 2014 campaign. |

This Year's Outlook Long-time star runner Erin Jaskot and a strong group of seniors are gone, so the Dutchmen have a big rebuilding task ahead of them. This year is probably too soon to be challenging Pearl River and John Jay - Cross River, but senior Kassidy Ayres should have a strong season and Tappan Zee has a pack of young runners on the way up. |

The Panthers had a fabulous 2013 that culminated with the top trio of Tiana and Talia Guevara and Laura Nolan earning medals at States and then taking 5th in the Federation meet. The Guevara twins are gone and a rebuilding project is in order for Miller Place, but with a pair of Laura's leading the team in 2014 as Laura Barreca joins Nolan at the top, the Panthers are the favorites to take the S11-B crown again.
The John Jay - Cross River champs have a lot to celebrate at the Federation meet.
