2014 NY Girls XC Preview: Overall and Federation

New York State XC Season Guide
--- Girls 2014 ---
NYS
Season Intro
Yet another cross country season of indescribable importance is charging at us as the runners of 2014 get set to write their names in the record books. But before the second weekend of November rolls around and the NYSPHSAA runners don their snow shoes up in Canton and the New York City teams battle a stray hurricane at Van Cortlandt, there will be a season of unimaginable heroics to play out. And before a select group of NY teams take their place on the national stage, there will be unspeakable amount of pain to survive, all for the fun and joy of it.

Working as always off the speed ratings compiled on the Tully Runners individual and team profiles, the New York State XC Season Guide provides a lot of team performance and historical data and many questions about that most unknowable of all subjects: who's going to be running big on the XC trails this fall. Many of last year's runners are back and the year promises to be a bright one for NY runners.

The five-part Season Guide for the boys includes an overview of the NYSPHSAA class action for A, B, C, and D, and in the leading section there is also coverage of the Federation leagues for New York City and Buffalo teams consisting of public school PSAL, Catholic school CHSAA, and independent school AIS. With about 70 team profiles included, the guide is a bit chunky and is thus divided into those five hopefully more digestible portions on the NY MileSplit site. The top teams are sorted on the average Tully Runners speed ratings (TR) of the top 5 returning runners, which is a convenient but certainly not optimal way to compare teams that are unbalanced or have a lot of new blood. The regression factored listings on Tully Runners are far more nuanced, but everything in preseason is fuzzy, so none of the numbers tossed into the articles have much gravity to them. And as with last year, all information here that does unfortunately manage to seep its way into your cranial cavities should be removed once the season begins.

Cheers to yet another XC season like no other.

Corning freshman Jessica Lawson had a breakout debut 2013 XC season winning both the States B title and here the Federation championship.
2014 Season Overview
If last year is any indication, the girls' 2014 NY XC season will be a mix of the traditional bride's rhyme about something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. The Old last year included both the Fayetteville-Manlius teams extending very long States title streaks, St. Anthony's and McKee Tech repeating their reign in NYC leagues, and Megan Reilly of Warwick Valley taking a second straight States win. Some of the New included John Jay-Cross River winning Feds, Tully winning its first States title, Queensbury getting its 5th States title but first by a home team, Hackley winning the AIS, and six new States class or NYC confederation winners that included Corning's Jessica Lawson, Onteora's Julia Rubin-Armstrong, Maple Grove's Hope Pietrocarlo, Our Lady of Mercy's Charlotte Malloy, and Nightingale-Bamford's Carolina Beroutsas. Another name that could be added to the previous list is Benjamin Cardozo's Denise Branch, but we'll put her in the Borrowed section since she took the baton given to her by her Judges' teammate Sabrina Southerland. And as for Blue, well there were many runners sporting shades of the color at all different levels.

One big change last year was that for the first time ever the NXN Nationals champion was not an NY team after Fayetteville-Manlius's 7-year streak was stopped in a close loss out at Portland. But the past year always serves as a spur to get to the next level for the coming season, and 2014 will feature a lot of familiar faces challenging for the titles. FM will again enter the season as the favorite in Class A with Saratoga as the expected jousting partner, Class B will feature a slugfest that includes four teams at the top that have won 23 States titles between them and last year's Feds champ John Jay-Cross River, the C battle will likely pit Bronxville and its 12 States trophies against East Aurora and its 6, and D includes reigning champ Tully and the previous three-years-winner Maple Grove. Last year's NYC-area winners St. Anthony's, McKee Tech, and Hackley are also favored in their groups.

At the individual level though, there will be many changes as new runners born in the 2000s begin to have more major impacts. In addition, as is the case on the boys' side, this year has the potential for two reigning champs to go head-to-head, as A-champ Megan Reilly and B-champ Jessica Lawson now run in the same class. And in both Class D and the AIS, two previous champs could meet up if Hope Pietrocarlo versus Sage Hurta and Carolina Beroutsas versus Paris Calcagnini matches transpire. A new champion will replace last year's winner in the B and C States class and the CHSAA and PSAL leagues where the 2013 winner either was a senior or left for new pastures. But so many top runners are in heavy competition for the top awards that it is foolish to predict anything about the individual champs except that the contests will all be exciting.

At the end of it all, two or more NY teams will be flying out to Portland, with Fayetteville-Manlius and Saratoga being once again the favorites but with many other teams in the hunt. Some runners will instead take a shot at winning one of the ten Footlocker-Northeast regional tickets to Nationals, and some of them will likely be NY girls. "Go west, young woman," is the call for all of the top runners, and a bunch will be coming back with lots of glory.

On a final note, two other NY runners whose feats last year need to be noted, even if one of them didn't run XC, were a senior, Mary Cain, and a junior, Anoush Shehadeh. Cain won two States XC championships and finished 6th as a Bronxville sophomore and then 2nd running unattached at NXN Nationals, and her other results in recent years have been mildly phenomenal. Shehadeh is from Larchmont, NY but runs for Phillips Academy in Andover, MA, and she finished 4th at Footlocker Nationals. Congrats to both.

Fayetteville-Manlius frontrunner Annika Avery captured the Nike Cross National - New York race, leading her team to a win and later a 2nd place at Nationals.
14 Questions for 2014

* 14-- Who will be rocking in the cradle? The surprise entrance of young running prodigies are a constant event for girls XC, and sometimes like with the 2009 B race they're actually named Young. Last year Corning's Jessica Lawson made a giant impact on NY XC as a 9th grade newcomer and finished among the top three or four runners in the state. Although this year's 7th graders haven't entirely crawled out of the cradle yet for us to name names, three 8th graders who showed big running promise last year include Naomi Wistner of Williamsville North, Kathryn Tenney of Colonie, and Anna Rybczynski of West Seneca West, Expectations for this year's freshman ware especially high for Samantha and Carly Vetter and Peyton Engborg of Saratoga, Katherine Lee of Shoreham-Wading River, Abigail Spiers of Niskayuna, Reilly Siebert of Syosset, and Hannah Reale of Shenendehowa.

* 13-- Who wants their Independence? Hackley won NYC's AIS championship by 15 points last year over Brearley, and this year with most of the varsity back for both teams, Brearley is barely behind Hackley in the projections. New recruits could greatly affect this race but the battle among the independent schools again looks to be close.

* 12-- Who's on top when the moving and shaking-up stops? Sophia Tasselmyer moved from Starpoint to East Aurora, and then the Blue Devils moved down to Class C from B. Now Tasselmyer seems to have the big edge for a state championship in C, and she could get two crowns with her team being the favorite for a title.

* 11-- What will be the big hit by a flock of Seagulls? The McKee Tech Seagulls took a 21-point win in NYC's PSAL championship last year, and this year appear to have an even bigger edge in the conference. Will MSIT be able to run far away from Benjamin Cardozo and Curtis in 2014?

* 10-- Who gets the D+? The top senior in last year's States Class D race finished 8th, and the top junior was 31st. The top six girls were sophomores, and the seventh was an 8th grader. This year's battle for top honors in Class D includes no seniors among the top 20 returners, which is just staggering. The top 5 does include two former state champions, Sage Hurta of Hamilton and reigning champ Hope Pietrocarlo of Maple Grove, Margaret Champagne of Seton Catholic-Plattsburgh whose sister Mary Kate won three titles, and two Tully runners Ashleigh Crawford and Ellen Jaworski who led the Black Knights to last year's crown. Add in Weedsport freshman Natalie Mogavero as the #6 runner, and all you can say is that Class D has a somewhat youngish cast.

*9-- Can the Friars cook up a fourth straight title? St. Anthony's has been the team in the NYC CHSAA for three straight years, but this year they appear to have a quartet of St. John the Baptist, Kellenberg, Notre Dame, and Sacred Heart hot on their heels. Will St. A's find their customary depth again and hold off their pursuers?

*8-- Which States' Sectional race is a real killer? When you start looking for the toughest competitions in NY's musical chairs Sectional battles, you can start with the Section 2 Class A race that includes four top-10 teams with Saratoga, Shenendehowa, Colonie, Shaker, and the there's that S4-A battle with Elmira and Corning going head-to-head. In Class B you again have Section 2 looking ugly with Burnt Hills, Queensbury, and Holy Names in an unsightly scrap, and Section 1 has a John Jay-Cross River team that was 2013's poster child for the inadequacy of the states qualifier system squaring off against Pearl River. Down in Class D, Section 3 has five of the top 10 teams packed into it with reigning champ Tully, Beaver River, South Lewis, Cooperstown, and Sauquoit Valley. Of those 16 worthies, only 5 at most will be at States.

* 7-- Who will B the best? The top two runners from last year's States B race have left town, Corning's Jessica Lawson for Class A and Starpoint's (later East Aurora's) Sophia Tasselmyer down to Class C. That still leaves a pretty august group of Garden City's Stephanie Gerland, Holy Names' Kaylee Scott, Cornwall's Beatrice Boylan, and Port Jervis's Kaylah Quarshie vying for the B crown along with Sweet Home's Ally Ortega.

* 6-- Who will make it big in NYC? Benjamin Cardozo's Denise Branch ruled among the NYC confederation runners last year and earned a 9th place at the Federation championship. Who assumes her spot at the top is a big question, with Kellenberg's Jazmine Frey, Convent of Sacred Heart's Paris Calcagnini, Nightingale-Bamford's Carolina Beroutsas, Tara Sweeney of Our Lady of Mercy, and Lisa Fajardo of of Bishop Ford all likely candidates, and Aaliyah Regg Wajid of Dewitt Clinton is the top returner from Feds?

* 5-- Will the Black Knights fight off the busy Beavers and Red Dragons again? The Tully girls won their first States title last year and are sizable favorites to repeat this year. But Class D teams can often have depth problems, and Tully's Section 3 sparring partner Beaver River has a big squad, and 2010-2012 States champ Maple Grove would like to get back to the top and add a fourth title.

* 4-- Can East Aurora stop the Bronxville streak? The last time anyone but Bronxville won the States C title, Millard Fillmore was president. That's actually not true, but the Bronco streak does go back to 2009, and all of this year's runners were in elementary school back then and probably reciting the names of the US chief executives. The last time East Aurora was in Class C was 2001 when they finished 3rd at States, and thirteen years later the Blue Devils are down below again and may be the favorites over a Bronco team that lost four members of its varsity squad. Could get interesting here.

* 3-- Who's the Queen B? Last year Queensbury became the first team ever to win a championship on its home course, and this year they are squarely in a pack of Class B teams including Burnt Hills, John Jay- Cross River, Pearl River, Cornwall, Holy Names, and Pittsford Mendon who all have preseason cred for the title. Three other teams could be in the chase with the addition of a key runner. The B side could be a chart topper.

* 2-- Which runner will rule the Empire State? Last year five different runners were tops among NY girls in the end-of-season Big 6 of events, with Warwick Valley's Megan Reilly posting the best time at States and Footlocker Northeast regional, Penfield's Katie Lembo the tops at Footlocker Nationals, Elmira's Abbey Wheeler the best at NXN Nationals, Corning's Jessica Lawson the champ at the Federation meet, and Fayetteville-Manlius's Annika Avery taking first in the NXN-NY. All will be back in 2014 except Lembo, so there's a lot of claimants to the imperial throne.

* 1-- Will Fayetteville -Manlius get number 9? Last year Fayetteville-Manlius suffered more losses than it had in the previous 7 seasons combined, ending up a little short in its bid for an 8th straight national title. But this year six of last year's varsity members are back and the team is rated the tops in the nation again. Even with some troubles, the Hornets still dominated the NY action, and the big question is whether any team can challenge them for the Class A title. Saratoga again seems to be the chief adversary, and with a varsity likely powered by three freshmen, the Blue Streaks will as usual be on a mission to end the Hornets' streak.

NY-XC-2013-guide
Three of the early leaders in the Federation meet were Penfield's Katie Lembo and Warwick Valley's Megan Reilly, followed closely by Suffern's Kate Zendell and a forehead of Miller Place's Tiana Guevara.
Trailblazing Trivia

* Deep-Sixing the 666 Curse For many years the assignment of the number 666 to a girl runner from Section 6 had been a horrific jinx in the States meet, resulting in a performance many levels below her standard level. It took an 8th grader who didn't know any better to overcome the curse, as Akron's Margo Henley not only upped her season's level of performance at the States meet but claimed a medal too. Maybe the evil tide has turned.

* Indecent Streaking Fayetteville-Manlius passed Honeoye Falls-Lima for the longest streak of titles at States when it picked up number 8 last year. Though everyone else is saying "Eight is enough!", the Hornets will continue the quest to make their trophy cabinet filthy rich.

* Broncosaurus Bronxville continues to pad its lead among the all-time top States small schools as it collected its 12th title in 2013, now just two shy of Saratoga's mark for all teams..

*Two at a Time For the 14th year in a row, two or more teams repeated as States champions, and it has now been 21 straight years that at least one team repeated..

*Comfortably Won Unlike on the boys side where the top three classes all had really close races for the individual title, the girls winners opened up comfortable margins with three champs winning by more than 10 seconds and only Julia Rubin-Armstrong having a closer call at 4 seconds in the C race. Megan Reilly won by 10 seconds in A, Jessica Lawson was 12 up in B, and Hope Pietrocarlo was 24 ahead in D.

*Sisters Squash the Brothers Running at the States meet was a stupendous 17 sets of sisters that included 36 girls and 7 pairs of twins, leaving the guys in the dust as they could only manage half as many brothers at 9 sets of 18 boys. Top contributing families were the Guevaras of Miller Place who had twins Talia and Tiana and little sister Siara in action, and the Russells of Candor who had senior Miranda, junior Carrissa, and freshman Julia at Queensbury, and they already graduated older sister Aubree. The girls ruled.

2014 Season Overview for Federation Teams
St. Anthony's has held sway over the CHSAA for the last three years, but after losing three of the top four varsity members to graduation, the Friars look a lot more vulnerable this year going into the season. Having Gianna Mincone, Shea Bohan, and Nicole Pikulik back still makes St. A's moderate favorites in the CHSAA. St. John the Baptist has its entire varsity back, however, with Kate McCormack one of the favorites for an individual title, and Kellenberg with Jazmine Fray at top is another serious contender. Two other teams that just need some depth to get up there are Notre Dame with frontrunner Sydney Rice and Sacred Heart with Paige Duca leading the way.

In the PSAL, McKee Tech has its top 5 back from its championship team of last year, and with Mary Kate Drennan and Nicole Maliborska leading the Seagull pack, MSIT could make a run at being the top team in the NYC area. Benjamin Cardozo behind Shanique Kirkpatrick and Curtis behind Taylor Henriquez and Diondra Bryant could also contend with some all-around development.

Last year's champ Hackley seems to have a small edge in the AIS with Claire Gomba and Julia Stevenson at the front, but both Brearley behind Nina Zweig and Claire Elliman and Marymount behind Claire Coughlin and Isabelle Mohi are not far back. A few other teams such as 2012 champ Nightingale-Bamford and Trinity could be contenders if they can do a good job of filling out their rosters.

St. Anthony's lost much of its top varsity to graduation and its depth does not look to be quite as robust as in past years. Still the Friars are rated the number 1 team in the NYC-area and with Gianna Mincone back healthy, Shea Bohan, and Nicole Pikulik leading the way, the other CHSAA teams will still be chasing St. A's. .

The Gators had an outstanding season in 2013 with a 3rd in the CHSAA as senior Alex Roda ran at front. With Roda gone, ND will need to fill in some holes to stay up there in the league, but they do have the core of a nice pack behind this year's presumed frontrunner, sophomore Sydney Rice.

This Year's Outlook
The Spartans had a good showing with a 4th place in the CHSAA last year, but they lost a fair amount of depth from last year's squad, and success in 2014 depends partly on bringing in some new legs and also on how strong frontrunner Paige Duca will be in her senior year.

But even without its individual PSAL champ superstars the Judges keep getting stronger because they are becoming a deeper team. If the trend can continue and Cardozo can fill in a little more closely behind Shaniqua Kirkpatrick, this team could be PSAL champs.
