Date: March 1, 2013, Saturday,  9:00 - 12:45 (Girls) Location: Cornell University, Barton Hall

Meet Info

The New York State Indoor Championships return to Cornell University's hallowed Barton Hall for the ninth straight year, and action is again going to be intense in a packed-in setting on Saturday, March 1. The girls will go first with 17 events in the morning (the 15 standard ones plus the intersectional relay and the racewalk), and the guys will have pretty much the same set of events in the afternoon.  Participants from 11 sections will be competing for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association crowns and also going for Federation titles while vying with the athletes from the mainly NYC-based PSAL public schools, CHSAA Catholic schools, and AIS independent schools.

The NY States Indoor Championship has all the action pressed into one day unlike the outdoor meet, and it has no divisions like outdoors or alternating guys and girls events. Each section and NYC association is allowed just one relay team, so each of the relay events generally have 14 teams competing in two heats. Up to three contestants can qualify from each of the 14 total entities in the individual events, so the more popular events like the sprints can have 36 sets of feet on the line, while that race walk oddity had only 21 girls finishing last year. And unlike at outdoors, there is no chance that you will be trying to set a state record running into a vicious wind and driving rain, which sounds a bit like the first day at MIddletown last year.

To be honest, States is a mixed bag of great action and big drama that is a bit eclipsed by the specter of all the top teams and athletes that can't be there, either because they're the second and fourth best relay teams in the state but have the top dog in their conference, or the coach would prefer to have the team pointed for Nationals.  But for all who make the trip up to Barton Hall, be prepared for a totally exhausting day of screaming and pandemonium and maybe that rare big upset.

Girls Events
The standings below for the previewed 16 events contested at States lists the top 12 or so overall competitors for each one. The listings provide a pretty firm indicator of who will likely win the event.  Note  that we have included our state rankings, instead of the State Issued seeds, which don't include races like Armory Collegiate, and other unnattached races.

There is also an intersectional medley relay being contested, but it's not a race we have good data on.

Event Info: 2013 Winner: Kadecia Baird (Medgar Evers) 7.08, State Record: 6.82, Meet Record: 6.94 ( or 6.6 handheld converted to maybe 6.84), State Qualifier Mark (FAT): 7.44

State of the Action:  It looks like Brenessa Thompson wants to keep the state title in the same school for another year, as the Medgar Evers senior finds herself as the top seed.  There are several respectable challengers here, who could push to the line, and steal the victory in the shortest of races.  The rounds also prove deadly to those who jump the gun early, making this title up for grabs.

Event Info: 2013 Winner: Deajah Stevens (Benjamin Cardozo) 38.23, State Record: 37.54, Meet Record: 38.23, State Qualifier Mark (FAT): 41.94

State of the Action:   While flat track's sometimes do trip up some of the speedier seeds, Zola Golden and Symone Darius are so far ahead of the pack, it may not be close enough to equalize.  However, the pair each have wins against the other, and the state meet looks to be the ultimate grudge match.  Plus, as both are underclassmen, the race may very well continue next year.

Event Info: 2013 Winner: Emma Gallagher (Garden City) 1:33.17, State Record: 1:29.69, Meet Record: 1:30.97, State Qualifier Mark (FAT): 1:38.74

State of the Action:   Say what you want, but you can't argue with Emma Gallagher's dominance over this event at the State Level.  She's won the past two years, and enters as the top seed once again this year.  However, the crowd has creeped up on her marks, as Yazmin Wilson-Jones looks to be the toughest competitor Gallagher will have faced at Cornell in years.

State of the Action:   As the races grow longer, so do the tactics of a race change.  At the state level, getting boxed in early is a real issue, and the winner here may be decided by a quick jolt out to lane 4, to run unimpeded.  Erin Jaskot enters as the top seed, but defending champ Leah Triller is in the race, and has a winning time of last year that would put her as the class of the field.  Jazmine Fray has always looked to push the pace of the race, and we'll see Saturday if she can run the wheels out of most people's kick.

State of the Action:   The seeds may not be quite telling, as Laura Leff's tops the field with a converted Millrose Mile time.  While only two girls have broken under 4:40 this season, I would expect that number to quadruple by the end of this race.  Will the victory go to the athlete best prepared for flat track running?  We will see soon.

State of the Action: This race may very well depend on Cardozo's intentions.  The race looks as if a rematch of old XC rivalries, as there are three state champions in the field, and nine qualifiers for either NXN or FL.  Denise Branch enters as the top seed by a healthy margin, but running the 3000m may jeapordize their top seed in the hotly contested 4x800m.  Behind Branch, there are more than a handful of girls who will be looking to pop a big performance.  It very well may turn into a kickers race, and one of the top races to watch.

Event Info: 2013 Winner: Ashley Wiggins (New Rochelle) 8.07, State Record: 7.76, Meet Record: 7.85, State Qualifier Mark (FAT): 8.74

State of the Action:   Ashley Wiggins enters as the top seed by a far amount, but lately has been sitting out of meets, nurturing a minor leg issue.   If she has been saving it for this race, look for the clock to go sub-8.  Last years High Jump State Champ Shayla Broughton is right behind her in the seeds, and may be looking to capitalize.

State of the Action:   The long jump at the state meet usually answers most questions about who is jumping marks in a low pit, as well as how do athletes cope with the jumping double.  In a pristine pit, there are several girls here who look to be vying for the title.  Imani McGhee has a slew of big wins this season, McKyla Brooks is just as consistent, and Kaylyn Gordon has been on a hot streak as of late.  Let the questions be answered!

State of the Action:   Much like the 300m dash, the flat tracks take away some of the speed here, but the top two seeds are so far and away, that the billing should remain the same.   This one will be one of the better races, as the top seeds have been battling it out all season.  Much of the outcome may depend on how much racing Evers will put into the 4x400m, the race before this.

Event Info: 2013 Winner: Bronxville 9:20.84, State Record: 8:53.67, Meet Record: 9:08.77

State of the Action:   Not a bad way to end the meet.  Like the 4x400m, the prior State Champs couldn't make it out of the qualifier.  In their place, Suffern enters at the second seed, depending on what the Cardozo girls can do on a double.  Suffern has chosen to focus all their efforts on the relay, while Cardozo will by vying for individuals events at the state meet, and rightly so with top seeded athletes in the 600m and 3000m.  However, Bronxville last year decided to concentrate on the relay, and many believed that was the key to their success.  We'll see if the strategy works again in that favor.
