News and Notes: New World Records, High School Rules, and More

MileSplit NY - An abbreviated day here in the office, as we are finishing up our Top 10 Moments of 2013.  Come Monday, our XC coverage begins with the girls side of the competition.  We have over 120 pa ges of analysis coming to you over the next five days, so get your summer reading in now.

But first, a new milestone was achieved at the USATF Long Island Elite Meet, where Kathy Martin set a new World Record in her age group.  At age 61, she set a new record time of 5:42.62 for the full mile.  Congrats!

 

 

Also, new rule changes have been approved for High School Track Competition, nationwide.  The biggest are in regards to proper Pole Vault Safety apparatus, and the under armor logo rulings.

Outdoor track and field is the second-most popular sport for boys at the high school level with 575,628 participants, and the most popular sport for girls with 468,747 participants, according to the 2011-12 NFHS Athletics Participation Survey. The sport ranks second in school sponsorship with 16,218 schools offering the sport for boys and 16,143 sponsoring the sport for girls.
