New Balance Outdoor Nationals Meet Recap

Greensboro, NC - The 2013 athletic season has finally concluded for most.  For the select few, (Mary Cain, Rudy Winkler, Devon Patterson, Sabrina Southerland, Kadecia Baird, etc) there are several qualifying meets on the horizon.  But this weekend was all about the title of All-American.  Five athletes took the overall crown, and plenty more put in some impressive performances to boot.  Enjoy a truncated meet recap below, and we'll be back soon, with the final state team rankings, along with a big surprise we know you've been asking for.

 

National Titles

Sabrina Southerland flew down to North Carolina for one purpose: to defend her National Title from Indoors.  And that she did, winning in a season best of 2:06.45.  Athlete Interview Click Here

Keelin Hollowood of Saratoga was on a mission after a dissappointing finish at the state meet.  And just like last year, she bounced back to win a National Title in Greensboro.  Athlete Interview Click Here

The girls racewalk came down to the final bend, as Annica Penn of Westhampton beach pulled away for the win.  Athlete Interview click here.

Rudy Winkler went unchallenged in an event he has dominated for years.  Athlete Interview click here.

Medgar Evers finally took down one of the toughest state records around, in the girls 4x100m.  Athlete Interview here.

 

Other Top Marks

One of the biggest performances of the meet had to be Mickey Burke's giant kick at the end of the 2-mile, to cross the line at nine minutes flat.  Athlete Interview here.

Desmond Mobley put in a great mark on his second jump, hitting 24-3 to take second overall.  Athlete Interview here.

State Champ JJ Stallworth took to the final of the 110m hurdles, but hit a hurdle en route.

State Champ Sophomore Izaiah Brown claimed the heat killed his race, but he still managed a killer 47.65.

The Boys DMR was a New York Affair, as Carmel (2nd), Rush-Henrietta (3rd), and Syosset (6th) all made the podium.

Warwick Valley put in a valiant effort in the DMR, as they took second overall in a very fast time.

Ashley Wiggins barely missed the final of the open hurdle race, getting close to the 14second flat mark once again.

Tragedy struck on the concluding laps, as State Champ Brennan Root clipped a hurdle.  Sidgie Greene sprinted to the finish to take second overall.

Yet again, Warwick proved they are the distance team to fear at Nationals, pusing 9:05 in the 4x800m.

Anna Flynn of Ursuline ran away from the pack to complete one half of the freshmen 2mile sweep.

Gavin Gaynor of Saratoga was the other half of that sweep, winning the boys division.

Symone Darius put in some great marks in the freshmen 100m, taking third overall.

It was the New Yorkers who were pushing the pace in the 2-mile, as Katie Lembo and Bella Burda led for most of the race.

Stephen Shine gave it his all over 5000m, a distance he hadn't seen since XC.  His mark of 14:44.58 is a new Section 1 record.

Rookie Winston Lee made the finals of the 100m, and took an astounding 5th overall.

New Rochelle had a very successful weekend, garnering All-American in two seperate relays.

The boys from Northport put in a great fight for the 4x1 Mile, almost taking down a state record

Jack O'brien was your top NY finisher out in the Javelin, slightly under his personal best.

It was another one over 60 feet for Ben Bonhurst in the shot put circle.

Devon Willis of Schalmont jumps to state leading, as his high 48 foot jump rocketed him to the finals.

Mike McCann took some leaps over the 6-8 bar, but the wind was definitely a factor.

State Champ Noah White did not have his best weekend, but still put in a respectable mark over 180 feet.

McKyla Brooks had some impressive jumps into the pit, but none to break her into the top 6
